Scotch Pine

 Pinus sylvestris Linnaeus

This tree has been more extensively planted in the eastern US for forestry purposes than any other European tree. It will grow well in almost all soil and climate conditions.

As a young tree it is pyramidal shaped and a pretty silvery gray green. It has  medium two to three inch but very stout and sharp pointed needles. They are flat and usually twisted so that they appear to be two colors at once.  It has tiny cones, woody but only about 1 1/2" to 2" long.

With age, it develops a broad rounded and irregular crown and is very picturesque. It graces many cemeteries and parks because of its ornamental and varying phases of growth.

It attains 60’- 90‘ heights and its branches grow clear to the ground in open planting conditions.
